| One of the mainstays of the Methodist Church is the system of non-ordained preachers being licensed to preach and conduct non-Sacramental services. This system has existed since the time of John Wesley, who in conflict with the established Church and wanting the word of God to be brought to the people who turned from the establishment, himself trained and authorised lay people to lead worship and to preach.
Colchester Methodist Circuit benefits from the services of 27 accredited Local Preachers together with a number who are in training and in preparation. Local Preachers usually spend several years following a training programme before they become accredited. Additionally a number of Worship Leaders are appointed by Church Councils to assist preachers at their own places of worship and on some occasions at other places of worship in the Circuit.
