Colchester was one of the major stopping places on the perambulations of Rev'd. John Wesley as he moved about the country delivering his unique brand of worship and Christianity.

Wesley visited Colchester on a number of occasions and in due course a building which became known as the Great Round Meeting house was constructed in Maidenburgh Street on the edge of the site presently occupied by Castle Methodist Church

A pulpit used by John Wesley to preach in the Graet Round Meeting house is preserved and is to be found at Castle Church, on the outside of the church is a plaque recording the visits of Wesley to Colchester.
